I was a sorter. The pay was $9.00 per hour as a Sorter. At first, I loaded and unloaded huge trucks at United Parcel Service on Soto Street in downtown Los Angeles. Each truck had 1 belt man and 1 loader. In time, I did both jobs . . .
Then, the plant supervisor asked me to go to Sorter School at UPS. I eagerly accepted his offer. I had to learn the names of all of the cities in California.

I was vice-president of Boys Senior Board, columnist, page editor and feature writer on the Blue & White school newspaper, and a member of the Usher’s Club. I was also a member of the Columbia University Writer’s Seminar in the summer of 1965, when I was a junior at LA High School. We read and discussed novels and short stories under the guidance of one of the graduate students in Columbia’s English Department.
Awarded a full 4 year academic scholarship to Cathedral Latin School for Boys in Cleveland Ohio, 1962. Brother Frank Nurthen, S.M., Society of Mary, awarded the scholarship to me.
I ranked in the upper ½ of 1 %ile of all the Catholic school students in the nation in 1961.
I scored in the 99th %ile range in all of my subjects, except for math.
I ranked in the 97th %ile in mathematics. This meant that there was no one higher in all of my subjects. I had scored perfectly; however, in Mathematics, 2 percent of all of the Catholic school students had achieved higher scores.
I was content.
My teachers at St. Aloysius were ecstatic!
The reason for their ecstacy: As an 8th grader, the test scores indicated that I had actually achieved scores that were the equivalent of someone who had graduated from college in grade 16.
After I accomplished this feat, I relaxed for decades.
I was 8 years ahead of my grade level when I was an 8th grade student.

Currently retirement eligible should I choose to exercise this option: Strong interest in people with disabilities and Minority education. I will be a facilitator, expediter. I write screenplays, short stories, novelettes for the global, international marketplace, and stories for children. When I return to the film industry, it will be as an Executive Producer since that is what I am.
UCLA Statement of Purpose
I was selected through UCLA’s Operation Crossroads Africa program to spend the summer in the village of Mobai in Sierra Leone. I was one of eighteen American and Canadian students.
I was the youngest of the group. I celebrated my 19th birthday in Africa.
As a result of our efforts, The Eastern Clinic at Mobai was founded in 1967. This was an important venture because it served a population which had no hospitals for a 400-mile radius. I kept in touch with Dr. Bockari M. Kobba for over 20 years and, although I never returned to Africa, I was kept informed of the subsequent companies which he built, such as a palm oil factory, a soap factory built around a compound which by this time has expanded to seven one story hospital buildings. In many respects, I count this experience as a defining moment. In 1967 there was civil unrest in the United States, but I decided to go to a foreign country and lend a hand to begin something that was sorely needed.
The second incident that is etched in my memory from my days as an undergraduate occurred when Professor Colin Young, then the chairman of the Motion Picture Division at UCLA, asked me to be one of two students to help enlarge the population of Minority students in the department. As a result of all our efforts, twenty new students who would not have been able to get into the department were admitted and made outstanding first film projects. I remember that there were five Afro-Americans, five Hispanics, five Asians and five Native Americans. The psychological toll on me was immense; nevertheless, we met our objectives and ushered in a different kind of filmmaking perspective at UCLA.
The third watershed occurred when Charles Burnett asked me to help him on his UCLA thesis film, “Killer of Sheep.” Although I was unable to help him because I had a heavy commitment at the major film studios, I recommended my sister, Christine R. Penick, who had no prior experience in the field. Burnett put her to work as a sound mixer. Christine was recently awarded a 5th Degree Black Belt in judo, which is one of the highest belts anyone can get. She remembers the time she helped Burnett and was thankful for me getting her on his picture. Burnett’s film was chosen by The Library of Congress in the U.S.A. to be permanently preserved in its historical record of films.
Years later, after Charles won the Critic’s Prize in 1979 at the Berlin Film Festival for “Killer of Sheep,” I helped him for two years to get “My Brother’s Wedding,” off the ground, edited and produced from 1983-1985. I had a bit of help from Lorimar Pictures on it. So, I donated my time in an effort to get a fellow UCLA filmmaker into the Hollywood arena, and I’ll always remember the experiences that we had on that picture.
The last incident that I remember most about UCLA and how it shaped my life to a certain extent, took place when Gordon Parks, Sr. directed “The Learning Tree.” Charles and I were highly critical film students back then. We thoroughly analyzed it. We walked to the Nommo newspaper office and I wrote a review of the picture.
Four years later I was selected to work on “Leadbelly,” and met Mr. GORDON PARKS.
I told him the story of the newspaper review. He laughed, because by then I knew how difficult it was to make a movie. We made “Leadbelly.” Parks was the director and that is also how I learned to play tennis, at the Beverly Hills Hotel, with Gordon Parks as my partner in a doubles match. I know his New York phone number even though I may not know any other director’s direct line. I call him from time to time. I sent him a Christmas card and a letter in 2000. He called me on Dec. 14th, 2000. He was 93. I was 56. That’s what I remember.
Now, I am 64 as of June of 2012, exactly the same age as Mr. Gordon Parks was when we first met at MGM and later at Paramount Pictures.
I am extremely proficient at collaborating with small groups to arrive at a mutually acceptable result.
My goal is to revive the 2 suspended and inactive companies that I founded PENICK PRODUCTIONS, INC. - 1977; Thomas Penick Productions, Inc. 1983,
and create:
2 mid size global companies: 1 G.I.G. GLOWBALL INTERGALACTIC GROUP, LLC on 9/9/2012 in Wyoming, and 1 G.I.G. BSR, BLACK STONE RANGER, LLC on 29 October 2012 in Delaware. Both of these companies are GLOBAL THINK TANKS. I AM THE SOLE PROPRIETOR. I AM THE CHIEF EXECUTIVE MANAGER OF BOTH COMPANIES.
I am particularly interested in accessing the India markets in terms of using their workforce to publish my Creative works prior to marketing them worldwide. The main focus is employing their highly intelligent college graduates within my companies structure, and using dedicated professionals from the United States and around the world with the aim of higher employment for low income and low skilled workers wherever in the world that they might be located.
I have some ideas that involve using global outreach to enable 48 individuals to learn and be productive in the United States every year through my companies. This involves a training period to learn the ropes and master the rudiments of what they will be doing to be of service to my companies. The companies would be global, yet, with local workforce, focusing on under employed and low employment in selected cities in the United States.
I intend to be global in a medium sized business fashion with a large reach into as many ancillary markets as possible.
Although I would not put a dollar amount on the gross profits of my companies once I revive them and get them up and running, I anticipate rather high revenues which would put us in the upper regions of mid size global companies.
I would sell 5 - 9 percent of the stock to the public in one of my companies to institutional investors in an I.P.O. on all global markets, STOCK EXCHANGES, SIMULTANEOUSLY. In this way, there would be participation in the profits and lead to a happier workplace and more productivity for middle level workers.
Volunteered to help on Organizing for America 2010 and I was promoted from "Committer" to "Grassroots Recruiter" to "Commit Captain" to "Change Maker," and finally “Super Organizer.”
I enlisted 29 people in the contest to see who would get the most votes. It was no contest.
My closest competitors merely got 5 people to commit to vote in the 2010 midterm elections in the United States.
From time to time, as needed, I tutor students from elementary school to the Freshman year of college in every phase of the English language. These students include South Korean, Hispanic, and Afro – American as well as Caucasian children and young adults.
I have worked well at a nonprofit, International Performing Arts Academy.
I specialize in teaching non-English speaking children on a one to one basis.

I was the Film Editor and Production Manager for Charles Burnett's 1st theatrical color film, "My Brother's Wedding."
I was the Prime Mover in getting the picture made and I was the person who stood by Charles throughout the picture. Two of us were on the picture from start to finish, Burnett and Thomas. We made the film with $75,000.00 that the German Television station, ZDF, extended to Charles for the purpose of making "camera tests."
Instead, we made a 35 mm. color feature film, with the assistance of Earl ( Pee Wee ) Williman, head of the Electrical Department at Lorimar Pictures at the old MGM Studios in Culver City, CA.

Trailer Editor: Domestic Television Syndication 1975 – 1978 (3 years)
The MGM Studios were notorious for never gaining traction in television. For the most part, the heyday of the roaring lion had come and gone; nevertheless, there were several short lived series that had not found a home once they completed their network run. Chuck Silvers, Editorial Supervisor for Television at Universal Studios and then at MGM, worked closely with Al Newman, a distribution expert. Essentially, we repackaged the hour long dramas into short segments of 1 minute in length and then used the series of short trailers that we created to sell the full length package of dramas to interested buyers in the Midwestern part of the United States as well as wherever there was interest in seeing the oldies but goodies. We also did the same with the Tom & Jerry cartoons. Very formulaic material which did not make much of an impact on the viewing populace at the time; however, it did engender a great deal of interest in the hinterlands, far away from Hollywood.
The trailer department was, therefore, incredibly profitable with me as The Trailer Editor for Domestic Television Syndication, Charles Silvers as my Supervisor, and Al Newman as the MGM Salesman.

I left the picture before I completed the editing process even though there was merely the opening 3 minute sequence that still needed to be edited; therefore, my title on "Black Sister’s Revenge," was Associate Editor.

I met Director Stan Taylor while I was working on Lady Sings the Blues at Paramount Pictures in 1972. He was the Script Supervisor for “Lady Sings the Blues.” He was also a Fellow at the American Film Institute in the Director Program at the Institute.
I was Stan Taylor's Film Editor and Production Manager. Since Gordon Stulberg, Chief of Production at 20th Century Fox Studio, had seen and appreciated Stan's film, starring Tracy Reed and LeRoi McDonald, Stan decided to take the editing credit for himself and gave me credit as "Associate Editor."
Stan’s picture was “in consideration for an Academy Award” as Best Short Film in 1972.
Taylor later made "Wednesday," a television drama centered around the Afro American, The Los Angeles Sentinel newspaper's, daily life.
Taylor gave me screen credit as "Associate Producer" for "Wednesday.

I was the 1st Assistant Film Editor for Michael Kahn for the Spook Who Sat by the Door, as well as the television pilot Fuzz Brothers at MGM starring Lou Gossett, Jr. and Felton Perry. The producers were Joel Freeman, and J.D.F. Black. We made an hour version and a ½ hour version at MGM.
I was Michael's 1st Assistant Editor on "Nightmare Circus" as well. Michael begged me to work as his 1st Assistant Editor on Steven Spielberg's "Close Encounters of the Third Kind." We worked at MGM in the daytime and independently at night on other films.
I turned Michael down three times when I was in Washington, D.C. trying to get the financial green light for a script that Aaron Stell, film editor of To Kill a Mockingbird, had written and wanted me to direct, “You Gotta Have a Little Luck.” Michael Kahn called me long distance. When I finally came to my senses and decided to accept his offer, Michael told me that he had hired Jeff Roland.
I met Spielberg years later at MGM when he was producing "Poltergeist." Toby Hooper was the Director.
I had met Toby Hooper years prior to that in a hotel with Corky Cooper, a young female editor from Texas that I had met when I was working on "Leadbelly," a Gordon Parks masterpiece that Paramount never gave full advertising or an adequate marketing plan for; consequently, it still languishes in their vault.
In 1985, I was hired as George Chasin's driver via a recommendation from Charles Burnett.
Mr. Chasin was a principal owner of Chasin, Park, Citrin Agency in Beverly Hills.

At St. Aloysius school in Cleveland, Ohio ranked in the 99th percentile of all of the Catholic school students in the nation in 1961. My scores in math were at the 97th percentile. Everything else was in the 99th percentile. The scores indicated that I had graduated from college in grade 16 even though I was in the 8th grade at St. Aloysius at the time.
Attended Cathedral Latin School for Boys on a full 4 year academic scholarship. Brother Frank Nurthen, S.M. ( Society of Mary ) awarded me the full 4 year academic scholarship at Cathedral Latin when I was entering my Freshman year as a 9th grader.
Achieved the fastest speed ever recorded at the Evelyn Wood Reading Dynamics Course in Cleveland, Ohio with a retention rate of 80 percent in the summer of 1962.
Virtually photographic memory in many cases.
I made a proposal to MGM and Kirk Kerkorian that I set up a "B" motion picture division at MGM that I would manage. My intention was to use the outstanding talent at film schools globally to handle all pictures budgeted at $6 million dollars or less.

About Me:
I am a globalist in every sense of the word through my writings, poems, films, abstract expressionist paintings, social concerns and environmental worries.
Jamaa Fanaka's "Black Sister’s Revenge" was presented at the UCLA Armand Hammer Museum on October 22, 2010.
The picture was released in 1976.
I have a screen credit as Associate Editor.
The 2nd film that I edited was my good friend and brother, Jamaa Fanaka's "EMMA MAE."
I edited "Black Sister’s Revenge" in 1975 while I was at MGM studios in Culver City. I was the token Afro - American editor at the studio and Jamaa had need of someone who would willingly assist him since he had gotten financing capability from the Ford Foundation and he was the FINEST DIRECTOR at UCLA since Francis Ford Coppola. In my opinion, Jamaa Fanaka is on a higher directorial plane than the acclaimed and illustrious Mr. Coppolla.
Unfortunately, I left Jamaa's picture with only 1 scene, the 3 minute opening of the picture, that needed editing. I had a job offer from Chuck Silvers at MGM to become the Trailer Editor for Domestic Television Syndication. I took the job from 1975 - 1978.
In 1978, I walked to the Department Head of MGM International and told him that I wanted to oversee a "B" motion picture unit under my company, PENICK PRODUCTIONS. I said the "B" unit would have $3 million dollar budgets each per picture. He urged me to increase that to $6 million since I would more than make back that money on the International marketplace.
I wrote a letter to Kirk Kerkorian, owner of MGM, that I wanted to set up a "B" motion picture unit at the studio under the Umbrella of MGM that would operate under their aegis through my Parent company "Penick Productions, Inc." I would handle all "B" motion pictures budgeted at the maximum of $6 million dollars.
I planned to use the ultra talented film students at UCLA and USC and NYU for starters, then worldwide...
No response from Kerkorian or his lieutenants. After initially allowing Kerkorian one week to peruse my proposal, I bombarded every one of his lieutenants at the Studio with the same proposal that I had given to Kirk Kerkorian.
I had balls in those days:)
Taking Executive Privilege, I tendered my resignation from MGM and left.
One of the films that I worked on in 1983 - 1985, Charles Burnett's, My Brother's Wedding, was shown at the Armand Hammer Museum near the University of California at Los Angeles on October 27, 2007. I was the Production Manager, Film Editor and I had a small role as an actor in the picture as Dead Body in a Coffin. I think that My Brother's Wedding is close to getting theatrical distribution since it was the first 35 mm. color feature film made by Charles Burnett.
Burnett was a classmate and early mentor of mine at UCLA when we were film students. I joined the Film department because he needed a member of a 12 person jury. It turned out that I was the only member of the jury who showed up at 7:00 am. to help him. Burnett and I became Friends from that day to the present. I helped him select the name of Steven for his first born son rather than Stephen. I also attended his wedding to his wife. I was quite honored.
He was one of my early mentors in film, along with Gordon Parks, Ivan Dixon, and Michael Kahn - Steven Spielberg's film editor.
I have many writing projects that are coming along nicely and as planned. I aim to have a 45 year retrospective of all of my creative work in 2014.
